> I've started reading Nicholas Howe's _Not Without Peril_ about the dangers and history of the Presidential Range of mountains in New Hampshire. One of the D&D-able bits is how important innkeepers are in opening up a wilderness. These innkeepers are enterprising individuals who spot the commercial potential of a local attraction ("all these gentlefolk want to climb Mount Washington!") and literally blaze a trail to make it accessible. Several innkeepers may cooperate to form a network of waypoints across a wilderness area that offers not only accommodations, transportation, equipment, and support services (rescue!) but also transmission of important local information.
