Watching del Toro's Frankenstein.... Wow, it makes Victor's background much more sympathetic and the creature more monstrous. All the stuff about the strict/abusive father, his mother dying young(er), and his father favoring his brother is not present in the novel. In the novel, Victor is purely spoiled and criminally irresponsible. He comes from a background that is not only extraordinary privileged but also extraordinary happy. "I work alone." "I'm very quiet." 😆 The confessional scene was funny. The old man doesn't reject the creature! Shame is almost a big a part of Shelly's Victor as pride. Del Toro's Victor lacks shame. Del Toro removes almost all culpability from the creature too, morally simplifying the story. Which is a problem. For me, Frankenstein is a revenge story. The only fun to be found in the novel is when the creature's a maniac, righteously tormenting Victor and even keeping him Victor a live to suffer longer. By making the creature almost purely a sympathetic victim, it sucks all the fun out of the story. It's a gorgeous movie, but.... Of course, it's not just an adaptation of Shelly's novel. It's also an original work by del Toro and a response to the cinematic history of Frankenstein.
