Sat Aug 26 06:00:01 EDT 2023 ======================================== Slept from one-thirty to eight-thirty. Patchy fog early in the morning. Mostly cloudy with isolated showers in the morning, then partly cloudy in the afternoon. Highs in the lower 70s. North winds 5 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 20 percent. Read more of The Shining. Grocery delivery at 2 PM https://silviolorusso.com/work/entreprecariat-eng/ Long nap in the afternoon. Finished listening to the audio book of Erik Larson's Isaac's Storm. Some interesting things: * Galveston had a big fire some years before the hurricane, resulting in local building codes requiring fire-proof roof shingles (slate). During the hurricane, those slate shingles became deadly projectiles, drawing a comparison by veterans to the bloodiest Civil War battles. * The changeover from gas lighting to electric was recent enough that the electric infrastructure was not very robust or redundant, but long enough ago that much of the gas lighting has become unusable. This left parts of the city, including the police station, in near complete darkness during the storm. * Some of the devastation would make startling images in a movie adaptation, like the locomotive being washed across the planes, the giant wall of debris, the lighthouse filled top to bottom with refugees silenced by the howl of the storm and the booming of the guns from the fort, and corpses thumping against the sailboat hull. Washed laundry, changed linens. Thought about my small internet, scaling to oneself idea/paper/whatever. * [ ] Exercise, even a little. * [x] Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables. * [x] Create something, even something tiny or a bit something bigger. * [x] Go to bed at least eight hours before I needed to wake up. So, was this a good day?
