Having run out of coffee this morning, I stopped at the grocery in the evening. I was mission-focused: get in, get coffee, get out. I rounded the corner of the coffee aisle, and this tiny kid — maybe not even two years old — gently bounced a rubber ball towards me. Without thinking, rather than catch it or kick it back to him, I instinctively stepped out of the way and let the ball roll all the way down the long aisle. The kid's face fell, like "why won't you play with me?", and some woman ran over and gave the ball back to him as his mother looked on with what I assume was mild disgust or horror. I muttered "sorry" and got my coffee as quickly as possible. Sorry, kiddo.
