Sat Dec 4 06:00:02 EST 2021 ======================================== Slept from eleven-thirty to seven. Woke briefly around three. Partly cloudy in the morning then clearing. Highs in the upper 30s. West winds 10 to 15 mph. Read more of The Secret, Book, and Scone Society. It's OK. Watched Arsenic and Old Lace for the first time in years. Frank Capra! Why did I think this was Hitchcock? Washed a load of laundry, changed sheets, vacuumed. Copied a hard drive for Julie, since I have no idea what work will entail next week. Really loathing how dysfunctional Lightstone/Beacon seem to be, like they're trying to make an inevitably hectic time as insane as possible. Need to make two more copies. Watched Hitchcock's The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927). Interesting as an early work, but it's amazing the jump in sophistication of Fritz Lang's M made just four years later. To be fair, Hitchcock was twenty-seven when he made The Lodger, while Lang was forty-one when he made M. Lang probably had a bigger budget too. There are a couple innovative, Hitchcockian camera shots, like when people are listening to the antagonist pace noisily on the floor above, Hitchcock cuts to a worm's eye view of the guy pacing, shot up through a glass floor. The cop is not likable — really a creep. Spent a little time studying RHCSA material. https://lichess.org/blog/YafSBxEAACIAr0ZA/exact-exacting-who-is-the-most-accurate-world-champion After spending much of the day crushed by despair about my job at the new company, I feel somewhat better this evening. Decided. If the new company had been just somewhat worse than H&T I might never have gotten around to actively seeking a different job. But they seem terrible, so I'm motivated to actually find something better.
