Wed Aug 19 06:00:01 EDT 2020 ======================================== Slept from eleven to seven. Woke around five, and slept only fitfully after. Sunny. Highs in the mid 70s. North winds up to 5 mph. Fifteen-minute walk in the morning. Cool and sunny. Saw a pidgeon. Feeling emotionally fragile this morning. Work ---------------------------------------- - Follow up on API issue Done. - Test Yardi license file Done. - Fix permission for Carmen Done. - Approve Scott's vacation Done. - Review Newegg invoices No. Cicadas singing. ci-CA-da. RI-co-LA. This project I've sunk a few days into to automate adding lockbox payments to Entrata blew up today. The Entrata API just doesn't fully support what we need, despite what their sales guy said. Maybe I could have foreseen this if I knew more about accounting. Disappointing, because I was a little proud of the robustness of the utility I wrote. Trying Beonex Owl to access Exchange in Thunderbird. I've grown to loath OWA — mainly its wonky message editor that adds doubled line breaks and moves my insertion point around at random while I type. How did OWA pass QC?? Thunderbird preferences to change from defaults: - Composition: uncheck Use Paragraph format instead of Body Text by default - Advanced: Config Editor: - mail.wrap_long_lines: false - mailnews.wraplength: 0 - plain_text.wrap_long_lines: false - Account Settings: set signature text - Account Settings: Composition: start my reply ABOVE the quote Home ---------------------------------------- - Post new homepage (man, "homepage" feels like an anachronism) Done. - Go to bed not late http://www.ethanzuckerman.com/blog/2020/08/15/to-the-future-occupants-of-my-office-at-the-mit-media-lab/ > I’m installing the knob on my last day at the Media Lab, which means I’ll never get the chance to use it. But it was important for me to make it for you because I wanted to leave the Media Lab better than when I found it, if only in this one small way. And now, with some distance from the Lab, I understand that the researcher who previously worked here wanted the same thing: to make something broken work slightly better, in an unorthodox and creative way. > And late one night, I saw a young woman walk past my door wearing a massive pair of delicate, filigreed copper angel wings. When I stopped her to inquire, she explained that the wings were attached to a Peltier junction, which rested between her shoulders. As she radiated heat, the Peltier junction cooled her off and generated electric power in the process. The copper wings served as a heat sink. It was one of the most beautiful projects I’ve ever seen. > PPS: There’s amazing stuff stored in the subflooring. I recommend gently peeling off some carpet squares, removing some floating floor tiles and exploring. I left you a circuit board that Andy Lippman claims to have wired by hand. Watch out for mice. What positive things have I gotten/learned from this pandemic? - Working from home is pretty nice, although I'd like the option to safely go into the office once or twice a week. - Working in front of an open windows is great, even when it's a little noisy outside. - much improved chopstick skills - Having groceries delivered is not too expensive, and it encourages cooking/eating in (though I'd love the option to eat out once in a while). - Video chatting with friends a couple times a week is great, and a reasonable substitute to hanging out in person. - I might want a house. - Kimchi is amazing, even the stuff in a jar. - Nachos are better made in a skillet than a microwave. https://rawtext.club/ https://sjmulder.nl/en/textonly.html https://tilde.team/ https://tilde.club/ https://sdf.org/ https://beancount.github.io/docs/the_double_entry_counting_method.html https://www.thisiscolossal.com/ https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2020/08/beth-cavener-human-book/ https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2020/08/louis-renard-fish/ …a Fantastical Compendium of the World’s First Color Illustrations of Marine Life https://supercollider.github.io/ > SuperCollider is a platform for audio synthesis and algorithmic composition, used by musicians, artists, and researchers working with sound. It is free and open source software available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It's in the Debian package repos! Started reading the Mothership rules. Might run this game, at least as a one-shot.
