Sun Mar 29 06:00:01 EDT 2020 ======================================== Slept from eleven-thirty to nine-thirty. Woke around six, and took a little while to fall back to sleep. Breezy. Mostly sunny early in the morning then becoming mostly cloudy. A 50 percent chance of rain. Highs in the upper 50s. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to around 45 mph. To do: - Unpack emergency supplies Done. - Walk No, but got some exercise hauling (and obsessively sanitizing) groceries. - Laundry Done. - Play with D&D stuff A bit. - Go to bed not very late Took my first multi-vitamin pill this morning to stave off the worst of malnutrition, now that I don't have much produce. Changed towels. Changed toilet paper rolls. (Hello, world where it's useful to track toilet paper usage.) While getting ready to walk, I noticed the parking lot at the market was more empty than I've seen it in days. Girded my loins, and bought some groceries. Stressful, but too crazy. Bought lots of stuff. Store staff had PPE. Maybe the majority of customers wore surgical masks. Windy out. Won't cancel my Instacart order, though. Would be good to have that stuff, especially the frozen fruit. Dr. Fauci on CNN. When we say daily cases decline, then we can start modifying the intensity of lockdowns. Fauci declined to give a timeline. Having gotten grocery shopping and laundry done, I'm feeling a bit more in control. Tired, but in control. Wish I had another day off tomorrow. Watched some anime. Michigan COVID-19 cases: 836 new, 5486 total Deaths: 21 new, 132 total Michigan's rate of new cases slackened _slightly_ today. Global COVID-19: 710,918 total, 33,551 deaths, 148,900 recovered Oakland country has fallen to #17, relative to other areas. Italy total population about 60MM, Michigan about 10MM. It looks like Italy might have plateaued on new cases recently with nearly 100K confirmed cases — about 0.0017% of their population. Perhaps Michigan might plateau at around 17,000 cases, in 1–2 weeks, in mid-April (based on 118% daily increase)? We could then see a decline in mid-May (slightly sooner than Bill Gates predicted nation-wide). Also, the last few days, maybe Michigan's rate of increase has started to declined: 119% → 125% → 420% → 163% → 143% → 132% → 128% → 134% → 124% → 129% → 128% → 127% → 118% (today). Maybe. The Army Corps of Engineers is converting Detroit's TCF Center (Cobo) into a 900-bed field hospital. They're also considering other sites, like dorms at Wayne and Oakland. https://www.freep.com/in-depth/news/local/michigan/2020/03/28/michigan-coronavirus-surge-covid-19-case-count/2898574001/ > President Donald Trump authorized a coronavirus disaster declaration for Michigan on Saturday, at the request of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. > The major disaster declaration through the Federal Emergency Management Agency makes the state eligible for statewide crisis counseling and provides funding for state, tribal, and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance, the White House said in a news release. > At least for now, the leaders of the region's health care systems say there are enough ventilators, but they will stretch capacity as the need rises by sharing a single ventilator among two patients, and converting anesthesia machines to ventilators. > The MDHHS reported that as of Thursday, there were 1,622 available ventilators in the state. No data was available about how many were already in use. > "It's a time-lag effect," he said. Based on the experience of other countries, it will take a couple of weeks for the rate of growth to slow down, the first indication that our social distancing is working. "We are in a growing phase. Hopefully, we will see some kind of a trend in a week or two — whether social distancing, lock-down indeed works."
