Sun Dec 23 09:49:53 EST 2018 Slept from midnight to nine without waking. High of thirty-six and cloudy today. Goals: - Work on comment system Done. - Christmas drinks with Ed and Magdalena? Done. Vacuumed, watered plants. Non-technical users, information freedom, federation, and anti-corporatism. Long-time topics of interest to me. Been thinking about this again because of the G+ shutdown and ensuing OSR exodus. The problem, in short, is how to let non-technical people have a voice on the Internet in a way as free as reasonably possible from centralized, corporate-owned platforms. Things like wizards and one-click installs are great, but not a nearly complete solution. Realistically, though, Joe user isn't going to run their own stuff, even with one-click installs. There will always have to be slightly technical users helping these non-technical users. The best realistic case is for us to make it cheap and easy for the kind of users who can muddle through installing WordPress on shared hosting. Those users can act as "fire marshals"/"lifeboat captains" for the non-technical users. (There must be a better analogy for semi-technical users helping non-technical users.) So, 1) make hosting and setup cheap and easy for semi-technical users, and 2) make data extremely portable so non-technical users can migrate between islands at will (or live across multiple island simultaneously). When jumping from island to island, it must be easy for users to preserve their identity and network contacts as they hop islands. Look at something like Tim Berners-Lee's Solid. It seems to take the position that existing platforms (e.g., Facebook) weather disruptions because it's hard for users to move their data. What data, I guess? The social network and individual identity seems more important to me than stuff like post data. Solid is pretty ambitious, maybe too ambitious. Met Ed and his sister, Maureen, at Griffin Claw. We'd planned to meet at Ed's, but Magdalena has been laid low by a cold. Nice time. Fun catching up with Maureen, who's still living in Manhattan, but just bought a house in the Catskills. Ten-minute walk. Chatted with Jay and Ed on Signal. Ended up voice chatting on Discord for a long time too.
