Sat Sep 22 09:21:15 EDT 2018 Slept from eleven to seven without waking. High of sixty-four (!) and partly sunny today. Goals: - Order food processor Done. - Brainstorm meals Done. https://paulgorman.org/misc/cooking/meals.html - Laundry Done. - Buy a new non-stick pan, mason jars, meat cutting board? Done. Watched The Flying Guillotine on Netflix. Very good. Fun. Well-structured. Somewhat weak characterization. Vacuumed. Changed sheets and towels. Thirty-minute walk. Overcast, cool, and pleasant. Squirrels exceptionally busy. Ventured into Beverly Park. Lots of people out enjoying the day. Saw a couple of soaring raptors, and possibly glimpsed a Norther Flicker. Eating healthy is hard and expensive. Low sodium almost necessitates cooking everything from scratch. The cost would probably go down if I got more calories from grains (brown rice, whole-grain pasta) and fewer from meat. Milk too. Cooked dinner from scratch (half+ left over for tomorrow). - diced large onion - 2 lbs very lean ground beef - diced green pepper - cumin, cayenne, paprika, black pepper - 2 diced tomatoes - served warm over romaine lettuce Pretty good. Took more than thirty minutes to make. Sugar's almost harder to keep low than sodium. Should have gone with the plain yogurt instead of "vanilla". Still, overall for the day, not bad. Calories 1660, sodium 417mg, sugar 34mg. Actually, slightly too low on calories and sodium. Didn't feel particularly hungry, deprived, or low-energy at any time today. Slightly irritable before dinner maybe. Over time, I expect eating well will occupy less time, as I get a feel for what and how much to eat. But low-sodium is definitely more challenging that teenage-junk-food vegetarianism. Not for the lazy. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3591307/ > While a US modeling study found that a sodium goal of 2300 mg/d sodium goal was consistent with nutrient adequate diets, it found that achieving lower levels (<1500 mg/d) as recommended for some population groups in the US, was less feasible. Full or nearly-full moon tonight, and bright Mars. https://daily.jstor.org/hawaiis-freemason-kings/ > Karpiel writes that part of the attraction for the kings may have been that Freemasonry echoed their issues with missionaries, decrying church hypocrisy in failing to feed the hungry and help the poor, and criticizing religious superstition as a threat to liberal thought. The order also offered connections, parallel to the Church’s, with Western elite society. Members of Honolulu’s lodges in the 1850s included legal and medical professionals, farmers, ranchers, and mariners from Europe, the United States, and South America. > With the support of the reigning family, the Masons helped build hospitals, public buildings, and civic improvements around the islands for decades, beginning in the 1860s. Meanwhile, Kamehameha IV served as “Worshipful Master,” or executive officer, of his local lodge, and most of his cabinet members were Masons. - yogurt (150 cal, 85mg Na, 12g sugar) - coffee with half and half (80 cal, 30mg Na, 1g sugar) - apple (60 cal, 1g Na, 10g sugar) - 28g roasted unsalted almonds (170 cal, 0mg Na, 1g sugar) - ground beef and vegetables (estimated 1200 cal, 300mg Na, 10g sugar) Calories 1660, sodium 417mg, sugar 34g.
