Sun Jul 29 17:02:54 EDT 2018 Slept from eleven-something to seven. Woke once or twice in the night. High around eighty today, and mostly sunny. I got back from Ed's cottage in Traverse City around four. Despite some misadventures, I had a good time. I drove separately from Ed and Magdalena. When I pulled onto the aptly-named Grandview Parkway, and the bay came into to view… a breathtaking sight, even at night. We all arrived around nine, had dinner, a couple of drinks, and went to bed. I slept poorly. Woke up before six, and couldn't fall back to sleep. Watched the sun rise on the bay, which was beautiful. Tired. We took the boat into town to get a bit to eat and browse the shops. A novel experience — going to town by boat, and mooring at a dock on a canal in the heart of the city. Jay came up. He met us in downtown Traverse City, just as we finished brunch. Jay, Ed, Magdalena, and I took the motor boat to Sutton's Bay. The boat broke down in the middle of the Sutton Bay harbor, leaving us stranded on the water. A good Samaritan in a straw cowboy hat and rubber dingy tried to help but failed. After we'd drifted further into the lake, the sheriff came, and towed us back to a dock at Sutton's Bay. Jay and Ed tried to fix the engine, but failed. Ed called AAA for boats. While they towed the boat back to Ed's cottage, Ed, Magdalena, Jay, and I took a couple of long walks and a bus ride back to Traverse City. A tiring day, and bad luck with the boat, but we still had fun. Walked down to the beach. Ed and Jay swam, while I fed ducks with Magdalena. The ducks, including a number of chirping ducklings, acted completely without fear of humans, even repeatedly running over my foot. Saturday night: full noon, Mars bright in the sky. We all had dinner with Jay, before we drive back to Frankfort. Ed and I both observed that we maintained an effortless rapport with Jay, despite not seeing him in a long time. I wish we lived closer. Sunday morning, I woke like a light switch at seven, feeling considerably more rested than I had the previous day. Went for a short swim. The water was surprisingly warm, especially for so early in the morning. I game Ed a ride home. We hit heavy traffic, but the ride back was much easier to tolerate with Ed than my solo trip there. I didn't drink much in Traverse City — two or three beers a day. Picked up a few when I got home, though. Brunch: coffee, French toast Dinner: beer, pizza
