Fri May 6 09:05:03 EDT 2016 Slept from ten-something to almost seven. One once or twice in the night, briefly. Sunny and seventy. Work: - Schedule printer install with Mrs. H Done. Monday at four. - Remove lockbox duplicates for Crystal Done. Went to Meijer at lunch to buy a mother's day card. Decided to get lunch at the Mediterranean place, but had to stop at a new Chinese place when the shop girl waved at me so hopefully. Not bad, but they need to dial back the salt a couple of notches. Also, a big carb/MSG bomb is probably not what I needed, given that I've been feeling a little low-energy today anyhow. Home: - Buy mother's day card Done. - Ask mom about mother's day Done. Lunch on Sunday. - Think about vps Done. I actually fired up an OpenBSD instance on Vultr. - Clean apartment Done. Vacuumed, wiped kitchen and bathroom counters, dusted, mopped the floors. I like the idea I read the other day (which I'm sure I've heard before) that the original D&D saving throws are so idiosyncratic because they're descriptive of the sort of dangers found in that world. Reminds me of a small epic catalog, like the lists from Homer. Accordingly, I'm working on saving throws for Zerapis: - Science Zaps or Space Pox - Volcanoes or Toppling Monoliths - Bad Trips or Cranial Explosions Shoot. I kept being frustrated that there weren't FreeBSD packages for Let's Encrypt. Then I realized that I hadn't run `portsnap fetch` in a long time, so `make search name=letsen` wasn't returning the TWO FreeBSD Let's Encrypt ports that do actually exist. What do I want to change when I rebuild my vps? - Less complexity. - Use Apache rather than nginx. I'm just more comfortable with Apache. - If I use jails as extensively again, make the jails more service-based rather than platform-based. E.g., run one instance of php-fpm rather than one instance for each jail that needs php. - Really, I probably don't _need_ to use jails at all. - Get Let's Encrypt working. - Even though I understand it more than I did, I still dislike ipfw. I should consider using pf, even if it's the older syntax. I really wish FreeBSD would put in the effort to port a newer version of pf from OpenBSD. - Maybe I should go with OpenBSD instead?? - It looks like there _is_ an official Let's Encrypt packages for 5.9. - Or maybe just Debian?? So, the number one thing for my vps rebuild is to simplify. I set up a vultr account. https://paulgorman.org/technical/openbsd-vultr-runbook.txt Actually, got quite far with the basic OpenBSD setup.
