Tue Dec 29 10:21:24 EST 2015 Went to bed after midnight. Woke up a couple of times, but got up before ten feeling rested. We ended up getting more accumulated ice/slush than I thought. It's forty-two degrees now, and most of it is melting. We might get a little snow today or tomorrow. Goals: - Laundry No. - Grocery No. - God damn ipfw (or chuck it and switch to pf) Done! I think I got it. The documentation really is poor (including the Handbook), and many of the examples floating around on the internet are misleading and in some cases dangerous. I still feel like ipfw _should_ be the best solution on FreeBSD, being actively developed and FreeBSD native. But the documentation is so poor that I can't recommend it. pf may be the best option for most people, despite its inferiority to OpenBSD pf. - Walk Done. After one o'clock, I took a long walk --- nearly an hour. Quite wet out with melting slush. Occasional misty rain, but the main thing was that my feet got soaked. Saw a ton of birds in the woods behind Huntley. Robin, robins, robin, some little brown jobs, a cardinal, and a couple of hairy woodpeckers. The pond in Berkley Park isn't frozen at all, but no ducks today. The sky is a dirty white-gray watercolor. - Install some bandwidth monitoring tool on blinky Done. vnstat A sample configuration file has been installed in /usr/local/etc/ Please add your default network interface in the 'Interface' line there before starting vnstat service. You can add any number of additional interfaces either in vnstat_additional_ifaces variable in /etc/rc.conf, or with this command: su -m vnstat -c "/usr/local/bin/vnstat --create --iface <your interface>" and restart vnstat service: service vnstat restart For more information about vnStat use "man vnstat" or visit: http://humdi.net/vnstat/ Hmm. Looks like I'm coming up on a year of diary keeping. I'll have to go back and review my entries. I've been reading a manga called Kuro over the last couple of days. One of those works that employs quiet, patient pacing and a tone of gentle, slightly melancholy irony, which I've noticed really only in some anime/manga. It's also probably easier to pull off on the page than the screen, since the reader is more in control of the pace. http://bato.to/comic/_/comics/kuro-r11140
