Yesterday, my main home workstation failed to boot following a routine update. > Initramfs unpacking failed: no cpio magic > Failed to execute /init (error -2) > Kernel panic — not syncing: no working init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. See Linux Documentation/admin-guide/init.rst for guidance. Fixed by booting to alternate media, mounting my main drive chroot, and reinstalling grub. Even after successful reboot, a bunch of stuff was messed up until I ran `dpkg-reconfigure locales`. Still not sure what caused the breakage. Hopefully, it was a one-off.
