Started reading Writing an Interpreter in Go.

Probably not a novel thought or a perfect analogy, but...

Imagine a grade schooler who learns to swear. The transgressiveness is a thrill and the kid starts swearing constantly. His parents scold him and send him to his room, but eventually he realizes that there's nothing more his parents can do to really stop him. He tells the rest of his school class. They all start swearing, realize no one can stop them, and they revel in it together, the thrill amplified as they egg each other on.

Arguably, this is some part of the mechanism that shifted the public Overton window over the last decade. A few people (and media personalities) realized that no one could stop them from acting like asshole bigots, and the thrill of it spread like a mutually reinforcing contagion.
