Thu Nov 26 07:50:43 EST 2015 Went to bed at midnight, slept well, and woke up at seven. High of fifty-eight today and rainy. Most of the snow had melted by last night, and I imagine there won't be any trace of it by the end of today. Happy Thanksgiving! Going to Kruse and Muer with mom and Renny for Thanksgiving dinner. I've been spec'ing out various home server builds for months. I finally pulled the trigger today. Requirements: - Support FreeBSD - Support ECC RAM for possible ZFS - Low power, energy efficient - Quiet - Not too expensive Intel really can't meet these requirements. I went with an AMD build. - AMD Athlon 5350 Kabini (quad core 2.05GHz, 25W TDP) - 8 GB ECC - Dual Intel NIC The whole build was around $300. Haven't decided on storage details yet. For the short term, I'll probably just repurpose the ssd I've been using with my RPi2. http://www.silentpcreview.com/article29-page2.html Hmm. I was torn between wanting a lot of storage and wanting to remain energy efficient and quiet. I settled on a pair of 1TB Western Digital 2.5" Red drives. They're not ssd efficient and quiet, but pretty close. Performance wont be anywhere near ssd's, but this isn't a performance-critical application (and zfs caching may make the performance better than expected anyhow). $430 all together. Not a terrible price, and I think it will suit by needs well. Lunch with mom and Renny was nice. Took a forty-five minute walk in the afternoon. Although the sky is more purple rain clouds than clear blue, it's very pleasant. Walked through the Kensington apartments across the way, and saw a woodpecker. I just noticed that although my domain names don't renew for a few months, my Dreamhost annual renewal happens on December 9th. Guess I need to act fast if I'm moving to a vps. No, nevermind. My year at Dreamhost doesn't renew until February. I didn't end up going over to dad's, but I called him and had a nice chat. May go over there this weekend to help him with his gazebo. Started making notes about Kerberos. I haven't looked at it closely in a couple of years, but I'll need it for NFSv4. http://paulgorman.org/technical/kerberos.txt
